The single-arm wall sconce became a fixture of mid-century interiors precisely because it did one job without fuss: a compact backplate, a straight arm, one point of light. Where earlier centuries favoured scrollwork and foliage, designers of the 1950s and 60s stripped the form down to its structure, letting the metal itself — turned, ringed, patinated — carry the visual interest. Pairs like this one were made for the everyday rooms of a house: bedside, hallway, stairwell, anywhere a soft, directional light was more useful than an overhead fitting. A well-made sconce from this period reads as architecture, not ornament.
This pair is patinated brass, dating to the 1960s, each sconce built from a circular backplate mounted on a swivel joint to a turned brass arm with reeded and ringed detailing along its length, terminating in a socket fitted with a small pleated shade. The turning on the arm is even and crisply cut, with each ring and reed holding a clean edge — a useful check against later reproductions, where this kind of detailing is often softened or cast rather than turned. The backplate swivels independently of the arm, allowing the light to be angled once mounted. The two sconces match in scale, turning, and patina.
Both sconces present in strong condition, their brass carrying an even, deliberate patina with no bright wear or plating loss visible on either piece. Whoever fitted these before you kept the pair together through at least one rewiring. They are ready for either side of a bed or a stairwell wall.
