Pair of Small Chinoiserie Style Ceramic Lamps, Painted Phoenix Pair Decoration, Tea Caddy Form, Brass-Tone Fittings

Two brightly coloured birds chase each other in a circle across each of these small white lamps. Their tails sweep round in blue, green, yellow and red, as if caught in mid-dance. They are a cheerful pair, made to bring colour to a quiet corner.

Each lamp base is white glazed ceramic in the shape of a rounded tea caddy, with a domed shoulder and a narrow band of yellow, green and blue pattern at the neck. On the front, two long-tailed phoenix-like birds circle one another in a painted roundel. Each lamp is fitted with a brass-tone lamp holder. In Chinese decorative art, two phoenixes circling each other stand for harmony and good fortune, which is why the paired motif appears so often on ceramics.

The pair is in good vintage condition, with one small chip to the underside of one lamp, and our workshop fully rewires both before they leave. The pair stays together, as it was made. On two bedside tables, a pair of bookshelves or either end of a mantelpiece, they add a bright, small-scale accent.
