Pair of Table Lamps in Gold-Toned Metal with Patterned Fabric Shades

Baluster-stem table lamps, paired with fabric shades carrying a damask or floral scroll pattern, were a mainstay of mid-to-late 20th century decorating — the metal base doing the structural work while a patterned shade added color and texture at eye level, a combination flexible enough to sit in a traditional or a more eclectic room alike.

This pair follows that formula: a gold-toned metal lamp with a double-ball baluster stem, set on a stepped round foot, paired with a tapered coolie-form fabric shade in a warm tan ground carrying a metallic gold damask and scroll pattern. A shade patterned this way, with a raised or metallic-thread motif on a plain ground, is chosen specifically for how it behaves once lit — the pattern reads as flat decoration in daylight but glows and separates from the ground once the lamp is switched on, adding a second layer of visual interest a plain shade doesn't offer.

The interior of each shade shows some staining, though there are no visible defects on the outside. Both lamps have clearly been well kept, and now move forward together to a new setting. Suited to a living room console, a bedside pairing, or either end of a sofa table.
