At the court of Louis XVI, ribbons were everywhere. They trimmed gowns and hats, tied up garlands for festivities and hung bouquets in the salons of Versailles. Designers of the period loved them so much that they began to reproduce them in wood, stone and metal, so that a real bow seemed to have been tied around a picture frame, a clock or a wall light.
This pair of wall sconces is built around that idea. At the top of each, a looped ribbon rises like a hanging bow, and below it the ribbon is gathered at a leafy knot before its two tails fall and curl, as if made of silk rather than metal. This effect, where solid metal is shaped to imitate soft fabric, is a classic Louis XVI flourish. From the knot, two fluted arms curve out to hold flared bobèches, leaf-wrapped candle cups and drip-effect candle sleeves.
The sconces are in good condition, with some marks of use and a soft gilt patina that has mellowed with age. They have stayed together as a pair all these years, and they deserve to hang side by side again. They are well suited to framing an overmantel mirror, or either side of a bed in a classic bedroom.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XVI style wall sconces in gilt metal, each with a knotted ribbon loop and two candle lights. They are about 35 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
