Patinated Metal Sculpture of a Harpist, Abstract Figural Form, Hagenauer Werkstätte Style
Mid-20th century Viennese metalwork studios, most famously Hagenauer Werkstätte, popularized a highly reduced, linear approach to figural sculpture — a musician or dancer rendered as a few continuous curved lines rather than a fully modeled form, letting the pose and gesture carry the entire composition.
This piece follows that idiom closely: a stylized figure of a seated harpist, rendered in a warm patinated metal as a series of continuous, ribbon-like curves — the player's raised arm sweeping into the harp's frame — mounted on a rectangular wood base. It is offered in the style of Hagenauer Werkstätte; no maker's mark is visible in the photographs provided, so this is a style comparison rather than an attribution. Reducing a figure to a few continuous flowing lines like this is a harder sculptural problem than it looks — every curve has to read as anatomically plausible and gesturally correct from multiple angles with no surface detail to fall back on, which is why this reductive style became a hallmark of a particular strand of interwar Viennese design rather than a shortcut.
Condition is very good. The sculpture has clearly been well kept, and now moves forward to a new setting. Suited to a mantel, a bookshelf, or a console table, where its silhouette can be appreciated from more than one angle.
The piece weighs approximately 1.8 kg, giving real substance to what reads as a light, linear form.
