Petitot Wall Sconces Pair, Signed Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze Single Arm Sconces — French, Circa 1960

Maison Petitot has been casting light for Paris since 1860 — one of the last of the great bronziers d'art, whose workshop carried the eighteenth-century vocabulary through every decade since with the same sand-cast, hand-chased discipline. This pair is French, by Maison Petitot, circa 1960, each sconce signed and numbered on the reverse, in gilt bronze: the Louis XV rocaille model — a tapering fluted quiver backplate crowned by a swirled flame urn finial, from which a single sinuous acanthus-wrapped arm scrolls down and forward to a leafy rosette drip pan and a scroll-cast candle socket. Turn one over and the reverse tells the story — the Petitot signature and the number struck into the bronze, the house's practice since the nineteenth century, and around them the hand-finished backs that a serious workshop dresses even where no one looks. The gilt surfaces carry some traces of wear consistent with their sixty years. The pair is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch and arrives prepared for wall installation, in working order.
