Set of Five German Art Deco Brass Wall Sconces, PE Stamped, Frosted Glass Shades — Hamburg, circa 1930

The German commercial interior of the late 1920s and early 1930s produced some of the most considered institutional lighting of the Art Deco period. Where the French tradition reached for ornament and the Bauhaus for reduction, the Hamburg workshops found a middle ground: solid brass, geometric backplates, restrained decorative accents — lighting that read as authoritative without being heavy, and that could hold a corridor or a boardroom wall without competing with the architecture. These pieces were made in series for specific buildings, stamped by their manufacturers, and installed to last. Most were removed during postwar renovations and have not been seen since.

This set of five sconces comes from a Hamburg administrative building associated with the Globushof — a major commercial complex of the period — and each carries the identical PE stamp punched into the brass backplate, the manufacturer's mark that confirms coordinated original production rather than assembled pieces. Each sconce is built around a geometric pointed backplate in solid brass, its surface chased with a central X-motif ornament, from which two gently curved arms sweep outward and upward, each terminating in a turned socket cup. The frosted opal glass shades are the tulip-and-ruffle form typical of the period — the glass acid-etched to a satin finish that diffuses the light evenly. The brass throughout is the heavy, unplated kind that was standard in German commercial production of this era — solid material, not a decorative surface.

These sconces have come through nearly a century of building life in good original order. Four shades are present and sound; one shade is missing from the fifth sconce and can be straightforwardly replaced with a period-compatible example — noted and priced accordingly. The brass carries an honest working patina across all five pieces, consistent and attractive. They arrive fully rewired and ready to use.
