Four lions carry this small casket on their backs, their paws planted firmly on the table. It is a box built with a sense of ceremony, even for a single ring. It gives a dressing table a quiet touch of old-world grandeur.

The casket is made of silver-tone metal in a shaped, serpentine outline, with bands of beading and leaf-tip borders around the lid and base. Each corner rests on a short leg that rises from a paw foot to a lion's mask. The lid is decorated with engraving, and the interior is lined in red velvet. Legs that run from a paw foot up to a lion's mask follow a furniture tradition from ancient Rome, revived for cabinets and caskets in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The casket is in good vintage condition, with the plating worn in places to show the warmer metal beneath. The wear to its plating has been left as it is, part of the story of a much-opened box. On a dressing table or a bedside table, it holds rings, earrings and small keepsakes.
