Silvered Metal Candlestick-Form Table Lamp, Scrolled Handle, Beaded and Gadrooned Detail

Candlestick forms with a side carrying handle were made across Europe through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for exactly the practical reason the handle suggests — to be picked up and carried safely from room to room. That same low, wide-based stability made the form an easy candidate for electrification later on, since nothing about its balance or footprint needed to change to hold a socket and bulb instead of a flame.

This example is worked in silvered metal, built as a socket rising from a beaded collar and baluster knop, set above a wide, gently sloped drip pan, and continuing down to a stepped, gadrooned circular base. To one side, a scrolled handle curls outward and back on itself in a double loop. Note how the gadrooned banding on the base echoes the beading at the socket collar, a matched pair of decorative registers that ties the top and bottom of the piece together, typical of well-considered silvered metalwork.

The piece reaches us in good used condition, with wear and light scratching consistent with genuine age and handling, as visible in the photo. It has been fitted with a socket and cord for electric use. Placed on a nightstand or hall table, its low profile and side handle give it a slightly different, more intimate presence than a taller column lamp.
