Single Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Wall SconceGold-Tone Metal, Ribbon Bow, Rope-Fluted Arms and Tassels, 28 cm

A ribbon tied in a bow, two cords crossing below it and a knot holding them together: this sconce tells a little story in metal.

At the top is a three-looped ribbon bow. From it, two ribbons cross and run down to a wrapped knot, then end in a pair of tassels. Two arms twisted like rope sweep out and up from the knot, and each ends in a flared cup with a leafy collar. In 18th-century France, ribbons tied in a knot were a symbol of love and loyalty. That made them a favourite on wedding gifts, and soon on furniture, clocks and lights.

The sconce is in very good vintage condition, with a soft, warm patina, and the old wiring reaches us as found. It has kept its shape and detail and is ready for a new wall. Hang it above a console, beside a fireplace or over a bed.
