Stainless Steel and Black Plastic Table Lamp Base, Stacked Cylinder Design, 1960s

Mid-20th century lighting design increasingly explored the stem itself as the visual subject, building a lamp base from a stack of alternating geometric elements rather than a single continuous turned form — an approach borrowed from the industrial and space-age design vocabulary of the period, where contrasting materials and repeated shapes did the decorative work that carved ornament once did.

This base follows that idea closely: a round, polished stainless steel foot supports a stem built from a stack of cylindrical steel segments alternating with flat black plastic discs, rising to a socket at the top. Alternating a reflective material with a matte one along a single stem, as seen here, is a deliberate visual rhythm — the eye reads each material change as a beat, breaking a tall vertical form into segments rather than letting it read as one uninterrupted shaft.

Condition appears original and unaltered, as noted by the seller. The base has clearly been well kept, and now moves forward to a new setting. Suited to a desk, a console table, or a study, ready for a shade of the buyer's choosing.
