Tooled Leather Jewelry Box with Drawer, Dark Brown Leather with Cut Geometric Motifs, Leather Strap and Hasp

Everything about this box is leather: the outside, the inside, the strap, even the drawer pull. Dark and warm, it has the feel of something made by hand and carried for years. It is a practical box with real craft in it.

The box is covered entirely in dark mahogany-brown leather. The lid has a notched, scalloped edge and a raised central panel cut with a leaf-and-dot geometric design, framed by bands of fine lines. A leather strap on the lid closes over a small decorated hasp. Below, a drawer with a shaped leather pull slides out. Inside, the box and drawer are lined in smooth leather rather than fabric. Designs like these are cut and pressed into dampened leather with knives and stamps, and as the leather dries, the lines hold their shape.

The box is in very good vintage condition. Its patina is left as it has formed through handling. On a dresser it holds jewelry and watches, and on a desk it keeps cufflinks, keys or small keepsakes in the lidded compartment and the drawer.
