Two-Light Desk Lamp with Painted Metal Tôle Shade, Rose Urn Decoration, Silver-Tone Candle Arms, French Country Style

This lamp is made for a writing table: two candle lights, a painted metal shade to keep the glare off the page, and a ring at the top to carry it from room to room. It has the easy, practical grace of a country house study. It is a working lamp that is also a pleasure to look at.

A shaped, canted-corner base of silver-tone metal carries two candle cups fitted with cream candle sleeves. A central shaft rises between them to a ring handle. On the shaft sits an oval shade of painted metal in a warm ochre ground. At its front, inside a scrolled brown cartouche, is an urn of red roses and green leaves, with garland swags to either side. Painted metal of this kind is known as tôle. It became a favourite for lamp shades because it reflects light down onto the table and doesn't scorch the way fabric can.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition, and our workshop fully rewires it before it leaves. It goes to its next desk with its painted shade and its character unchanged. On a writing desk, a library table or a bedside table, it gives focused, warm light and a touch of French country charm.
