Vintage 1960s–70s Italian Silver-Tone Dog's Head Stirrup Cup
A tall cup that ends not in a foot but in a finely modelled dog's head, ears pricked and muzzle raised: it's a piece of country-house tradition, made for a toast before the hunt.
The cup is a smooth, slightly flared cylinder of silver-tone metal. A narrow band at the top marks where it joins the cast head below. The head is detailed with deeply chased fur, almond eyes and upright pointed ears, so when the cup is turned over it becomes a small sculpture. This is a stirrup cup. It was traditionally handed up to riders already in the saddle before setting off, and since it has no foot it can't be put down until it's empty.
The cup is in good vintage condition, with light scratches and wear from use to the smooth bowl and a bright finish on the head. It's ready for a toast again, or to stand head-up on a bar cart, a bookshelf or a desk as a conversation piece. It suits a study, a library or a country-style room.
