Vintage Art Deco Gilt Spelter Seated German Shepherd Dog Sculpture on Portoro Marble Base, Alsatian Statue, 1930s-40s Decor
Sitting up tall with ears pricked and tongue lolling in a happy pant, this German Shepherd looks straight at you as if waiting for the next command. The sculptor captured the breed’s alert, loyal character: the thick ruff framing the face, the soft fringe of fur on the chest and legs, the deep-set eyes and the bushy tail swept around to one side. Every lock of the coat is finely chased. The gilt finish has worn softly back on the high points to a darker bronze tone, which gives it a warm, lived-in glow. He sits on a block of black Portoro marble veined in gold. It’s a handsome piece for a mantel or desk, and a heartfelt gift for any shepherd owner.
Condition: Good Vintage Condition, with no breaks to the spelter or marble, and wear to the gilding in places, as pictured.
