At the turn of the last century, a generation of European designers walked out into the garden and came back with a new language. They stopped copying the past and drew instead from what grew: the stem, the bud, the tendril reaching for something to hold. In German-speaking workshops it was called Jugendstil, the style of youth, and it turned the most practical household objects into small studies of living line.

This tray is a fine example of that way of seeing. A poppy opens at the centre of the well, with a second bloom and trailing convolvulus leaves rising beside it, all in low relief. Clusters of flowers sit at either end of the rim. The handles are formed as loops of ribbon that seem to have been tied rather than cast. Around the whole piece runs the movement's signature whiplash curve, a line that tightens into a coil and then releases, like a stem flicked by the wind. That curve carries the eye from flower to handle and back again without a single straight edge.

The tray reaches us with the gentle marks of a long life in use. Its finish has mellowed to a warm golden tone across the well and rims, and the high points of the relief are softened by handling.
