Vintage Art Nouveau Style Vide-Poche Signed M. ArvisenetPatinated Metal Dish with Blackberry Branch Relief, 12.5 cm

Around 1900, French sculptors began to sign small, useful objects as well as large works of art. Pin trays, inkwells, paper knives and pocket-emptying dishes, the vide-poches, were modelled by artists, cast in editions and sold in fashionable shops. A signed dish on a dressing table became a small, affordable way to live with sculpture every day, and the natural world was its favourite subject.

This little vide-poche, signed M. Arvisenet on the rim, shows that idea well. A shallow oval well is framed by a flat border, with a squared, pierced handle at each end. Across one side, a blackberry branch lies in high relief: serrated leaves spread over the rim and into the dish, a small bud is just opening, and two ripe berries are modelled in tiny round drupelets. The stem curls down into the well, as if the branch had just been laid there. The metal has a warm, mottled patina, darker in the hollows and brighter on the raised leaves.

The dish is in good condition, with a natural patina. Small enough to hold in your palm, it is ideal for rings and earrings on a dressing table, keys and coins in a hallway, or paper clips on a desk.

In short, this is a vintage Art Nouveau style vide-poche signed M. Arvisenet, in patinated metal with a blackberry branch in relief. It is 12.5 cm long and exactly as pictured.
