In the banking halls, notaries' offices and libraries of the early twentieth century, the working day was lit by a lamp very much like this one. As electric light replaced gas, a new kind of desk lamp appeared, built to throw a steady pool of light onto ledgers and letters while leaving the room around it in calm shadow. It became the emblem of serious work, and it has never really left the desk since.

This banker's lamp, attributed to the 1930s–40s, is a fine example of the type. A long, reeded arm curves up and over from a cast metal base plate with raised decorative borders, set on a canted-corner wooden plinth. At the top sits a half-round metal hood with rounded end caps. The hood is the heart of the design: it directs the light downward onto the desk and keeps glare away from the eyes, and a swivel joint at the foot of the arm lets you tilt it exactly where you need it. The brass-tone metal has mellowed into a warm patina that sits handsomely against the wood.

The lamp reaches us in good condition, with a soft patina on the metal and light wear to the wooden plinth from years on the desk. Like every lamp we offer, it passes through our workshop before dispatch, so it arrives ready to use. It belongs on a writing desk, a library table or a home office, where it will give the same focused light it was made to give.
