Around 1900, French workshops liked to cast humble country objects in metal. A wicker basket, an ear of wheat or a garden snail, all things anyone might find on a farm, were turned into small, lasting ornaments for the town house. A pocket-emptying dish shaped as a little harvest basket brought a touch of the countryside to a hall table or a dressing table.
This vide-poche is cast as an oval wicker basket, its sides and floor modelled in radiating rows of woven strands. A small loop handle rises at each end. Across the basket lies a long ear of wheat, its grains and stalk crisply detailed, and a snail makes its slow way along the rim and into the dish. The metal has a warm, even brown patina, with the high points of the weave picked out in a lighter tone.
The dish is in excellent condition. It fits in the palm of your hand and works well as a home for rings, keys or coins, or as a small curiosity on a desk or a shelf.
