Vintage Bouillotte Two-Light Lamp with Shaped Silver-Tone Base and Dark Green Tôle Shade

A glossy dark green shade sits over two warm candle lights, and the silver-tone base below has softly curving edges. Together they make a lamp that suits a writing desk on a winter evening.

The lamp stands on a shaped base with a moulded rim and gently curving, notched corners, raised on small feet. Two turned candle cups with cream drip sleeves sit at either end. A square rod rises from the centre, with a pierced scroll handle at the back for lifting. The oval green tôle shade, cream inside, slides on the rod and is held by a round thumbscrew. A ribbed, melon-shaped finial sits at the top. The ribbing on the finial is called gadrooning, from the French "godron", a pleat or ruffle. The rounded lobes look like the folds of a gathered collar.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. The outside of the shade has a small scratch. Inside, the shade has scratches and two old drip marks, and the silver-tone finish shows light wear on the base. The lamp works, and it will be fully rewired in our workshop for many more years of use. Set it on a desk, a bureau or a bedside table.
