Vintage Brass and Silvered Metal Bowl, Swan Handles, Striped Two-Tone Body — Europe, mid-20th Century

The swan-handled bowl belongs to a decorative tradition stretching back to the classical vessels of antiquity, where the bird's long curved neck made a natural handle form — elegant, structurally sound, and instantly recognisable. Mid-twentieth-century metalworkers revived the motif for the vintage decorative market, combining it with the striking visual effect of alternating light and dark metal bands, a technique that turns a simple round bowl into something with genuine graphic presence.

This bowl is European, mid-twentieth century, worked in solid brass and silvered metal. The body is a shallow rounded basin, its surface banded in alternating stripes of warm brass and darker silvered metal running horizontally around the full circumference — the striped effect giving the piece a boldness that a single-tone surface could never achieve. At either side, two substantial swan-head handles rise from the rim, each neck curving gracefully outward and the head finished with fine relief detailing suggesting individual feathers along the neck and crown. Note how the swans face outward in opposite directions rather than mirroring each other inward — the composition reading as two birds independently alert rather than a single symmetrical motif, giving the bowl a livelier presence.

The bowl carries an old, honest patina throughout — oxidation, light scratching, and partial wear to the silvering, most visible on the interior, as photographed. These marks are consistent with genuine age and part of the piece's character; it is sold exactly as photographed. It works equally well as a table centrepiece, a fruit bowl, a bonbon dish, or a catch-all for small items.
