Vintage Brass and Wood Column Table Lamp, Art Deco Style — Europe, Mid-20th Century

The column lamp is one of the most enduring forms in European decorative lighting. From the candlestick columns of the eighteenth century through to the electrified desk lamps of the twentieth, the form remained constant: a shaft rising from a weighted base to carry a light at the correct height for reading or conversation. The best versions of the mid-century period combined two materials in a single column — wood for the shaft, brass for the capital and base — allowing the warmth of the timber grain to sit against the cooler precision of the polished metal, the combination that gives the form its particular domestic authority.

This lamp is European, mid-twentieth century, in polished brass and warm-toned wood, the form a classical column in two materials. The base is a stepped square plinth in polished brass — three tiers rising from a broad flat foot to a narrower column base, the proportions of an architectural pedestal rendered at lamp scale. The wooden shaft rises from this plinth as a smooth cylindrical column, its grain running cleanly from base to capital; above, a brass capital in the inverted trumpet form transitions the column to the socket fitting, with a turned brass collar and a disc that mirrors the base plinth. Note how the brass fittings at capital and base share the same profile — stepped, with a flat disc at the widest point — the repetition of a single element at top and bottom that gives the lamp its compositional discipline. The polished brass is bright and even throughout.
