The mid-twentieth century saw French lamp makers return again and again to eighteenth-century vocabulary — fluted columns, acanthus leaves, urn-form sockets — reworked in brass for a generation furnishing postwar interiors. This lamp sits comfortably in that tradition, borrowing its architectural bones from a much older source and rendering them clean and unfussy.

This is a table lamp in gilt brass, its stem rising through a stylised acanthus leaf collar to a plain tapering shaft and an urn-shaped socket housing, all set on a reeded cylindrical riser above a stepped circular foot. The vertical reeding on both stem and base — continuous fine grooves running top to bottom — is a device borrowed directly from classical column fluting, giving an otherwise plain brass surface some textural interest without added ornament. No maker's mark is visible in the photograph supplied. A pleated ivory-white fabric shade completes the piece.
