Vintage Brass Hall LanternTapered Square Pendant with Bevelled Star-Cut Glass and Leaf Mounts, Attributed 20th Century, 64 cm

In 1667, Paris began lighting its streets at night with rows of glass lanterns hung from ropes across the roads, one of the first public lighting schemes in Europe. The tapering, four-sided lantern became a familiar sight, and its shape moved indoors to light entrance halls and stairways. Long after the streets turned to gas and then electricity, the classic lantern remained the natural choice for a welcoming hall.

This hall lantern, attributed to the twentieth century, keeps that classic form. Its four glass panels taper gently towards the base, held in a slim brass frame with small ball finials at each corner. A cast brass leaf is mounted on each lower corner, and above, curved brass arms rise to a cup where the chain is fixed. The glass panels are bevelled, meaning their edges are ground at an angle, so that each edge acts like a narrow prism and catches the light. Each panel is also cut with a sparkling star motif.

The lantern is in very good condition. It comes with its decorative chain and a matching brass ceiling canopy. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to install. It makes a graceful light for an entrance hall, a landing or a stairwell.

In short, this is a vintage brass hall lantern, attributed to the twentieth century, with bevelled star-cut glass panels, leaf mounts, a chain and a canopy. It is 64 cm long overall and exactly as pictured.
