In the 1860s, a new kind of oil lamp appeared on the desks of students, clerks and writers: the student lamp. Its clever design set the oil reservoir to one side, on a tall central rod, so that gravity fed the oil steadily to the burner on the other side. The light stayed bright and even through long hours of reading, and the reservoir cast no shadow on the page. The lamp could also slide up and down the rod to the height you needed. It became one of the classic library lamps of the nineteenth century.

This brass lamp is in that student lamp style, now made for electric light. A tall rod topped with a ball finial rises from a round, stepped base and a turned baluster stem. On one side hangs a polished cylinder with turned finials, recalling the original oil reservoir. On the other, a curved arm holds the light, with a turned brass fount below and a deep green painted metal shade above, edged in brass. The shade is lined to send the light down onto the desk.

The lamp is in very good condition. It weighs 3.2 kg, so it stands firmly. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. It is a natural choice for a writing desk, a library table or a home office.
