Vintage Brass-Tone Oval Trinket Dish with Dragons and Sea Creatures in Relief, Japonisme Style

Two dragons twist across this small dish, spiky backs arched and claws reaching, among bubbles and small sea creatures. It's a lively scene in a space no bigger than your hand.

The dish is oval and made of brass-tone metal. Two dragons in relief curl head to tail across a finely textured ground, with small sea creatures and rising bubbles around them. A border of raised discs runs around the rim. In the 1860s and 1870s, after Japan opened to Western trade, Europe went through a craze for Japanese art. Designers copied its dragons, waves and sea life, and this taste became known as Japonisme.

The dish is in very good vintage condition. It has caught keys and coins in other homes, and it's ready for yours. It suits a hall table, a dressing table or a desk, for rings, keys or paper clips.
