Vintage Brass-Tone Scallop Shell Trinket Dish, Rocaille Style, 1960s
A scallop shell, deep and ribbed, has been cast in warm metal and made into a small dish. A second, tiny shell sits at the hinge like a crest.
The dish is brass-tone metal, shaped as a scallop shell with strong radiating ribs and a wavy rim. A small fan-shaped shell decorates the hinge end. The word "rococo" comes from the French "rocaille", meaning rock and shell work. In the 18th century, French designers covered furniture, mirrors and silver with shell shapes like this one, and the style has been loved ever since.
The dish is in good vintage condition, with marks of age to the surface. It has had a long life on other tables, and it's ready for a new one. It suits a hall table for keys, a dressing table for rings, or a bathroom shelf as a soap dish.
Shell summary: a brass-tone scallop shell dish with a small shell crest at the hinge.
