Vintage Brutalist Wrought Iron Table Lamp, Woven Cane Shade — France, circa 1970

The Brutalist lamp base belongs to a design movement that took its name from raw, unfinished materials and its confidence from refusing to disguise them. Where earlier lamp traditions dressed metal in polish and ornament, the Brutalist designers of the 1960s and 1970s let forged iron announce exactly what it was — hammered, bent, left dark and textured — and paired it with equally honest natural materials like woven cane, the combination reading as sculpture that happened to hold a light rather than a light fitting with decoration applied.

This lamp is French, circa 1970, a Brutalist table lamp with a hand-worked wrought iron base and a handcrafted woven cane shade. The base is built from three looping iron legs, each forged in a continuous curling gesture that spirals outward from the central stem before curling back on itself at the foot — no two curves identical, the irregularity that marks genuine hand-forging rather than a cast reproduction. The stem rises from the point where the three legs meet to a simple disc platform supporting the socket. Above, the shade is entirely handmade: a cylindrical drum woven in natural cane in an open honeycomb lattice, bound top and bottom with a pale fabric edge trim. Note how the cane weave allows light to pass directly through its open pattern rather than being merely diffused by a solid shade — when lit, the lamp will throw a honeycomb pattern of light and shadow onto the surrounding walls, the practical consequence of choosing an open weave over a closed fabric.
