Vintage Celadon Porcelain Table Lamp with Grapevine DecorationAttributed 19th Century, Patinated Metal Mounts, Sold Without Shade, 31 cm

In eighteenth-century Paris, luxury dealers called marchands-merciers had a clever trade. They bought fine porcelain vases and set them in ornamental metal mounts, turning them into ewers, potpourri jars and candelabra. The fashion for mounted porcelain lasted well into the nineteenth century, when elegant vases were fitted as oil lamps and later as electric ones.

This table lamp, attributed to the nineteenth century, continues that tradition. A baluster-shaped porcelain vase, with a slender neck and a full body, is glazed in a soft celadon green. Celadon is the pale jade-coloured glaze first developed by Chinese potters more than a thousand years ago, and it has been admired and imitated in Europe ever since. On the front, a framed panel of interlaced bands surrounds a bunch of grapes with vine leaves and a gilt branch, painted in deeper green, white and gold. The vase sits on a cast metal base with scrolled corners and is topped with a moulded metal collar.

The lamp is in good condition, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. With a shade of your choice, it suits a bedside table, a desk or a console.

In short, this is a vintage celadon porcelain table lamp with grapevine decoration and patinated metal mounts, attributed to the nineteenth century. It is 31 cm tall, sold without a shade, and exactly as pictured.
