Vintage Cold-Painted Metal Dog Figure in the Viennese TraditionLong-Coated Dog Turning Its Head, Attributed Late 19th–Early 20th Century

In nineteenth-century Vienna, workshops became famous for tiny metal animals painted in lifelike colours. The figures were cast in metal and then painted “cold,” meaning the colours were applied after casting without being fired, so they could be layered with great delicacy. Because the paint was never baked on, it slowly wears away with handling, and a softly worn surface is part of the charm of these small figures.

This little dog is in that cold-painted tradition. It stands squarely on all four legs, its long coat modelled in fine wavy locks, with the head turned slightly to the left as if something has just caught its attention. The face is especially lively, with alert ears, a dark nose and warm brown eyes. The paint, in deep brown and black with touches of tan, has worn away in places, letting flecks of golden metal show through.

The figure is in good condition, with wear to the painted surface, as pictured. It carries no inscription. Small enough to rest in the palm of your hand, it makes a delightful piece for a desk, a bookshelf or a collector’s cabinet, and a thoughtful gift for any dog lover.
