Vintage Compagnie des Indes Style Ceramic Vase Lamp Base, Famille Rose Floral Sprays and Gilt Trim on Octagonal Base

Sprays of pink roses and small flowers are scattered over a white lobed vase, framed by bands of turquoise and red leaves. It brings a soft, painted garden onto a table.

The lamp base is shaped as a covered baluster vase in white glazed ceramic. It has a lobed body, a domed cover and a short foot on an octagonal plinth. The decoration shows sprays of pink and red roses with green leaves, between bands of turquoise and red leaf shapes, finished with gilt lines. This pink-rich palette is known as famille rose, "the pink family". It comes from Chinese porcelain made for export to Europe in the 18th century, and French makers later copied it in the style called Compagnie des Indes.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, with small spots of pitting to the glaze in places. It reaches us in working order, and it will be fully rewired in our workshop before dispatch. It has done well in careful hands, and it should go on doing so. It suits a bedroom, a living room side table or a hallway console.
