Vintage Crouching Rabbit Sculpture, Patinated Metal with Mottled Brown and Green Patina, Animalier Style, 12 cm
Few animals have charmed European artists as long as the rabbit and the hare. In 1502 Albrecht Dürer painted his famous Young Hare, recording every whisker and tuft of fur, and the image still delights people today. Since then, rabbits and hares have been favourite subjects for sculptors, who love their alert ears and the sense that they might leap away at any moment.
This small sculpture captures a rabbit crouched low, forelegs stretched out in front and long ears raised, as if pausing to listen. The body is modelled in smooth, rounded forms, with the hind legs gathered beneath it and a short tail lifted behind. The surface carries a mottled patina in browns, rusts and greens. A patina is the coloured surface layer that forms on metal over time or is applied by the maker, and here it gives the rabbit the soft, natural tones of an animal in the field.
The sculpture is in good condition, with its patina intact. Small enough to hold in one hand, it suits a desk, a bookshelf or a windowsill, and makes a charming gift for anyone who loves rabbits.
In short, this is a vintage crouching rabbit sculpture in patinated metal, in the animalier style, with a mottled brown and green patina. It is 12 cm long and exactly as pictured.
