Vintage Directoire Style Brass Hall Lantern, Glass Cylinder Pendant with Three Lights, Chain and Canopy, 62 cm
The Directoire style takes its name from the Directory, the government that ruled France for just four years, from 1795 to 1799, after the Revolution. After the extravagance of the old court, taste turned sober and restrained. Designers kept the classical forms but stripped away most of the ornament, leaving clean lines, simple bands and the occasional neat finial.
This hall lantern shows that restraint well. A clear glass cylinder is held between two plain brass bands, joined by slim vertical bars. Above, three curved brass arms rise to a central rod, topped by a small turned finial, and each arm ends in a little ball at the rim. Inside, three candle-style lights sit around the central stem. The lantern hangs from a hook and chain and comes with its matching brass ceiling canopy.
The lantern is in good overall condition. The brass has dulled and tarnished, and the candle sleeves are worn, so it will benefit from some cleaning and new sleeves. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to install. It makes a classic, quietly elegant light for an entrance hall, a landing or a stairwell.
