Vintage Empire Style Double Inkstand, Two Gilt Metal Urn Inkwells on Speckled Marble Base, Attributed 19th Century, 14 cm
French cabinetmakers and bronze makers loved speckled marbles. Some of the most prized, known in France as brèche, form naturally when broken fragments of stone are cemented together over time, creating a lively, mottled surface. Pieces of such stone were often used as the bases of clocks, candlesticks and desk sets, where their pattern set off the gleam of gilt metal.
This double inkstand, attributed to the nineteenth century and in the Empire style, stands on just such a speckled marble base, flecked in grey, cream and soft brown. On top sit two cushion-shaped plinths with a white glaze and softly scalloped corners. Each supports an urn-shaped inkwell in gilt metal, decorated with a band of fine diagonal ribbing and a row of tiny beads, and closed by a hinged lid crowned with an acorn finial.
The inkstand is in good condition, with a chip to the back left corner of the marble, visible in the photos. It makes a handsome centrepiece for a writing desk, and its two wells are just as useful today for pens, paper clips or small treasures.
