Vintage Empire Style Footed Dish with Griffin and Lyre Frieze, Silver-Tone Metal Pedestal Coupe, 15.5 cm
In the early nineteenth century, French designers filled their work with symbols from the ancient world. Lyres stood for music and the arts, and griffins stood guard over treasure. This classical style, known as Empire, was used on furniture, silver and tableware, and it has been loved and revived ever since.
This small footed dish, or coupe, is in that style. A shallow round dish sits on a short pedestal foot. Around the wide rim runs a raised frieze of winged griffins, lyres and scrolling acanthus leaves. The griffin is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle, and Empire designers often used it as a guardian figure. The dish can be taken apart: the bowl unscrews from the foot.
The dish is in good vintage condition and is sound and solid. The silver-tone finish has worn softly in places, letting a warm golden tone show through, which adds character. It works well on a sideboard or a festive table, for wrapped sweets or small keepsakes, or as a dish for keys and rings.
