Vintage Empire Style Gilt Metal Caryatid Candlestick, Draped Classical Figure on Square Plinth

The candlestick is made of gilt metal. A draped female figure stands on a round socle with a knurled border, above a square stepped plinth on small bracket feet. On her head rests a round drip pan and an urn-shaped candle cup with fine beaded bands. A figure of a woman used in place of a column is called a caryatid. The most famous are the six stone maidens holding up the porch of the Erechtheion in Athens. Designers in the Empire period loved to put them on candlesticks, clocks and furniture.
The candlestick is in very good vintage condition, with a warm gilt tone. It has stood on other mantelpieces for many years, and it's ready for another. It suits a mantelpiece, a dining table, a writing desk or a bookshelf.
