Vintage Empire Style Silver-Tone Candlestick with Tapering Shaft, Ringed Collar and Beaded Round Base
A tall shaft that grows wider toward the top gives this candlestick a strong, upright outline. The bright silver tone catches candlelight from every side.
The candlestick is made of silver-tone metal. A tapering shaft, broadest at the top, rises from a small cup of cast leaves on a round, flat base with a beaded edge. Above the shaft sits a ringed collar, then an urn-shaped candle cup with banded rims. A shaft that widens as it rises is called "en gaine", French for "sheath". Empire designers borrowed it from the tapering pedestals of ancient herms, or classical busts on posts, and used it on candlesticks, clocks and furniture legs.
The candlestick is in very good vintage condition. It has stood on many tables before ours, and it's ready to stand on yours. It suits a mantelpiece, a dining table, a sideboard or a desk.
