Vintage Empire Style Two-Light Bouillotte LampBird-Head Arms, Black Tole Shade, Ring Finial, Approx. 60 cm

Two swans hold the lights on this lamp, curving out from the stem on either side, while a dark shade above keeps the glow low and warm over a desk or side table.

The lamp stands on a round dished base. A leaf-cast knop rises in the centre, and two arms shaped like swans' necks curve out from it, each holding a candle cup and sleeve. A slim rod runs up through an oval black shade, with a small arrow near the top and a ring for lifting the lamp. The shade slides on the rod to set the height of the light. It's painted with a gold border and small gilt motifs that look like bees. Napoleon took the bee as his emblem after gold bee ornaments were found in the tomb of Childeric, a 5th-century Frankish king, so bees became a signature of the Empire style.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, with fine crazing to the black lacquer of the shade. The old wiring reaches us as found. It has been well kept and is ready for a new desk or bedside table. It suits a study, a library corner or a bedroom.
