In early nineteenth-century England, sporting art was at the height of its popularity. Painters and printmakers recorded every moment of the hunt, the races and country life, often with a light touch of humour. Their lively scenes of horses, riders and hounds hung in country houses and clubs, and they remain a much-loved part of English art.
This framed picture is in that English sporting style. At its centre, a rider on a chestnut horse rises in the saddle and holds his cap high in the air. Raising the cap is the traditional hunting signal that the fox has been sighted, pointing the rest of the field in the right direction. Around him, hounds race across the grass, and another rider can be seen in the distance. The scene is drawn as a soft vignette on warm tan paper. The picture is set in a wide cream mat with a gilt inner edge, inside a gilt frame.
