Vintage Framed Print of a French Diligence Stagecoach with Galloping HorsesGreen Double Mat and Wood Frame, 40 × 33 cm

Before the railways, the fastest way to travel across France was by diligence, the great public stagecoach. Packed with passengers inside and luggage piled on the roof, it raced between towns behind a team of horses, changing them at post houses along the way. The name comes from carrosse de diligence, meaning a “speedy coach.” Artists loved its bustle and drama, and scenes of the diligence became popular prints.

This framed print captures one of these coaches at full speed. A heavily loaded diligence, with “PARIS” lettered on its side and a mound of baggage under a canvas cover on the roof, is pulled by a team of galloping grey and bay horses. A postilion in a red jacket rides one of the leading horses, whip raised, while passengers look out from the windows. Soft colour brings the scene to life against the pale paper. The print is set in a green double mat with gilt lines, inside a warm wood frame with a gilt inner edge.

The print is in good condition, as pictured. It makes a charming piece for a study, a hallway or any room with a French or country character.

In short, this is a vintage framed print of a French diligence stagecoach with galloping horses, in a green double mat and wood frame. It measures 40 × 33 cm and is exactly as pictured.
