Vintage French Bouillotte Lamp, Signed Collange France, Brass with Blue Tole Shade — France, 20th Century

The bouillotte lamp earned its place in the French interior not by changing but by being right from the beginning. Invented for the card table in the late eighteenth century, its logic — a metal shade directing all the light downward, a stem that adjusts as the candles burn, a base weighted enough to sit stable on a playing surface — proved so considered that it moved from the gaming salon into the library, the desk, and the drawing room without alteration. The twentieth-century French lamp houses that kept it in production understood they were working with a form that did not need improving, only making well.

This lamp is French, twentieth century, Collange France, in brass with the original blue-green tole shade. The base is a circular platform in warm patinated brass, from which a turned column rises — chased at the capital with acanthus leaves — to the two candle arms that extend horizontally on either side, each ending in a bobèche and socket. Above the arms, the shade suspension rises to a scroll-and-ring handle at the crown, the brass cradle holding the drum shade at a fixed height above the candles. The shade is the deep blue-green lacquer of the classic bouillotte tradition, its upper face decorated with a running chevron frieze in gilt — the restrained ornament that gives the piece its period character without overloading it. The brass throughout has the warm, unpolished patina of a piece kept and used rather than displayed and ignored. The shade lowers along the stem as candles would burn down, keeping the light always just above the flames — the mechanism that made the bouillotte indispensable to anyone who read or worked by lamplight.

The brass is sound and warm across the base and arms; the shade is clean with some light wear consistent with age, as photographed. It arrives fully rewired and ready to use, plug adapted to your country at no charge.
