Vintage French Cut Crystal and Gilt Bronze Table Lamp Base, Neoclassical Style — France, circa 1950-1970

The neoclassical revival never fully left the French decorative arts, and the lamp trade of the mid-twentieth century kept returning to its vocabulary because the combination it offered — cut crystal for brilliance, gilt bronze for structure and warmth — had never stopped working. A lamp base built this way did two things at once: the crystal caught and multiplied whatever light reached it, while the bronze mounts, worked with the classical ornament of an earlier century, gave the piece the gravity of something considered rather than merely decorative.

This lamp base is French, circa 1950-1970, in diamond-cut crystal mounted on worked gilt bronze. The body rises through two crystal elements — a substantial urn-form upper body, its surface cut overall in a dense diamond-point pattern that catches light from every angle, and a shorter cylindrical lower section repeating the same faceted cutting — joined by a gilt bronze collar chased with a leaf-form frieze at the junction. Below, a further bronze mount carries an egg-and-dart frieze around the shoulder before the base descends to a plain square bronze plinth. Note how the diamond-point cutting on the upper urn and the lower cylinder is identical in scale and depth despite the difference in the two elements' proportions — the consistency of a single considered cutting programme applied across the whole piece rather than two mismatched components assembled together. The gilt bronze mounts are worked, not simply cast plain, giving the metal genuine decorative interest at both the collar and the base frieze.
