Vintage French Green Painted Metal Table Lamp, Oil Lamp Form with White Shade — France, circa 1950

The electrified oil lamp was one of the most charming conversions the twentieth century made from the nineteenth. The form — a round reservoir belly, a narrow waist, a flared foot, and a crown of petals at the top where the burner once sat — was so well resolved that when electricity arrived, the best lamp makers simply kept it and adapted it, understanding that an oil lamp's proportions had been refined over decades to sit correctly on a table, and that no entirely new design was likely to improve on them. The result was a lamp that read, at a glance, as older than it was — and was the better for it.

This lamp is French, circa 1950, in painted iron, the form a classic oil lamp translation: a spherical reservoir body on a trumpet foot, banded at the equator with a beaded ring, its surface painted in a soft matte green — the colour of verdigris, of garden ironwork, of the kind of object that has spent decades in a French country house and absorbed its atmosphere. The crown retains the original decorative petal collar at the top, the period detail that marks this as a quality casting rather than a plain utility conversion. The white pleated fabric shade is included and fitted, its clean vertical pleats complementing the rounded form below. At thirty centimetres with the shade fitted, this is a lamp scaled for a bedside table, a reading corner, or a small console.
