Vintage French Table Lamp, Maison Le Dauphin, Marbled Amber Resin Urn Body with Brass Fittings — France, 1970s

There's a particular strain of 1970s French lighting that took the classical urn — a shape lighting designers had leaned on for two centuries — and rebuilt it in warm, swirled resin instead of porcelain or bronze. The effect is softer and more painterly than its ancestors, closer to tortoiseshell or amber glass than to anything carved, while still keeping the balanced, waisted silhouette that makes an urn lamp sit comfortably in almost any room.

This example, by Maison Le Dauphin, follows that logic closely. The body is a deep amber-to-burgundy marbled resin, urn-shaped and full-bellied, narrowing at the neck to a brass collar before opening back out to a stepped, square brass foot. The shade is a generously proportioned pleated moiré fabric drum in soft white, tall enough to balance the weight of the base below it and to let the lamp read as a single composed object rather than a base with a shade added on top.
