Vintage Gilt Metal Table Lamp on Paw Feet, Turned Baluster Stem with Scalloped Fabric Bell Shade, 35 cm
Animal feet are among the oldest ornaments in furniture. Craftsmen in ancient Egypt and Rome carved lions’ paws onto the legs of thrones and tables as a sign of strength, and the idea never went away. It returned in eighteenth-century furniture and in the brass candlesticks and lamps that followed, where small paws seem to hold the whole piece firmly in place.
This table lamp stands on three such paw feet. They support a triangular stepped base, from which a turned baluster stem rises in a series of rings and swellings to the bulb holder at the top. The gilt finish is warm and bright. The lamp comes with a cream fabric bell shade with scalloped edges. Each scallop is shaped by the wire frame beneath the fabric, which divides the shade into soft, curved panels that glow when the light is on.
The lamp base is in very good condition for its age. The shade has a few small marks and can be cleaned or replaced to suit your room. It makes a classic reading lamp for a bedside or a library table.
In short, this is a vintage gilt metal table lamp on paw feet, with a turned baluster stem and a scalloped fabric bell shade. It is 35 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
