Vintage Gucci Table Lighter, Polished Steel and Brass Cylinder — Italy, circa 1970

In the 1960s and 1970s, Gucci produced a small number of desk and smoking accessories that have become among the most collected objects from that period of the house — pieces where the Florentine leather tradition gave way to polished metal, and where the design logic was pure geometry rather than logo or monogram. This lighter is Italian, circa 1970, in polished steel and brass, the form a clean cylinder in two sections — a polished steel outer sleeve banded at the base with a brass ring, from which the brass lighter mechanism lifts cleanly away. The steel is mirror-polished to a reflective finish; the brass of the base ring and mechanism has the warm, slightly matte tone of a quality alloy rather than plated base metal. The design is entirely without ornament beyond the proportions themselves — the cylinder's height-to-width ratio, the width of the brass band, the precise fit of the mechanism in the sleeve — which is the design language of the best Italian luxury objects of the period: things that announce themselves by their weight and finish rather than their markings.
