Glass and metal have long made good partners on the European table. Metal gave a serving piece its strength, its handle and its ornament, while a glass liner kept food fresh and clean and let the light shine through. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, makers combined the two in baskets and bowls designed to carry fruit, sweets or bread from the sideboard to the table with a little ceremony.
This handled bowl, attributed to around the 1940s, is a graceful example of the pairing. A round frame of silver-tone metal rises on a short stepped foot and holds a clear glass bowl, whose rim is engraved with a band of small leaves. Around the frame runs a frieze of repeating ovals between beaded borders, a classical motif descended from the egg-and-dart mouldings of Greek temples. Above it all, a tall arched handle edged with fine beading allows the bowl to be lifted and carried with ease. The effect is light and elegant, with the bright metal glowing softly through the glass.
The bowl reaches us in good condition, with the silver-tone finish slightly dulled and ready for a gentle polish to bring back its shine. It has been well looked after, and it is ready to return to the table. Filled with fruit or bread rolls, it makes a handsome centerpiece for a dining table or breakfast buffet.
