Vintage Italian Yellow Glass and Brass Table Lamp, Murano Style — Italy, circa 1970

The Italian glass lamp of the 1960s and 1970s solved a problem that no other material handles as well: how to make a light source that is as beautiful unlit as it is switched on. Murano and the workshops that followed its tradition understood that glass, properly formed and coloured, is itself the object — the lamp fitting merely the excuse to keep it on a table. The ribbed baluster form, drawn from the Venetian glassblowing tradition and updated for the mid-century interior, was one of the period's most successful translations: ancient craft vocabulary, contemporary proportion, warm colour that works in daylight and glows at night.

This lamp is Italian, circa 1970, in amber-yellow ribbed glass with brass fittings, and the form is a considered piece of work. The body is a blown glass baluster — narrow at the neck, swelling at the belly, tapering again to a brass collar at the base — its surface worked with vertical ribs that run the full height of the glass and catch the light differently as the eye moves around the piece. Above the body, a shallow glass disc in the same amber-yellow acts as a light diffuser, its underside ribbed to match the stem; below, a domed brass base gives the piece its stability and its warmth at the foot. The amber-yellow of the glass shifts between gold and honey depending on the light it sits in — warm in daylight, luminous when lit from within. The proportions — wide disc, narrow neck, full belly, broad base — follow the candlestick logic that Italian glass lamps have followed since the seventeenth century, updated here with the clean brass fittings of the mid-century manner.

The glass has come through fifty years without a crack or chip; the brass base carries surface scratches and some wear consistent with its age and use, as photographed.
