Vintage Large Archaistic Bronze Hu Vase with Cloisonne Enamel BandsDragon and Phoenix Decor, Ring Handles, circa 1900-1930

The shape of this tall vase comes from the ancient bronze ritual vessels of early China. A broad, swelling body tapers to a flared neck and a stepped foot, and two cast masks hold loose ring handles at the shoulders. Almost every surface is finely incised with tiny geometric diaper and key patterns, so the dark bronze shimmers like woven cloth. Around the shoulder runs a band of raised archaic scrolls, with a coiled dragon medallion on each side. Two bands of coloured enamel bring it to life: around the neck, a stylised phoenix with spreading wings in turquoise, coral and green, and around the belly, mythical beasts bounding through flowering scrolls in blue, red and white. At over 14 inches tall, it has real presence on a mantel, a console or a library shelf.

Condition: Good Vintage Condition, with a natural dark patina, small losses and wear to the enamel, and light marks consistent with age, as pictured.
