Vintage Louis XV Style Cage ChandelierGilt Metal with Shell Motifs and Scrolled Uprights, Four Lights, Chain and Canopy

The lustre à cage, or cage chandelier, was one of the great inventions of eighteenth-century French lighting. Instead of hanging candle arms from a single central stem, makers built an open framework of curved uprights around the middle. This “cage” gave the chandelier strength and an airy, architectural outline. In grand houses the cage was often hung with glass drops. In smaller rooms the gilded frame alone was enough, with its scrolls and curves picked out by the candlelight.

This four-light chandelier is built on that cage design. Four tall uprights curve out and down from a ringed central crown, each shaped as a scrolling S and decorated with leaves. On the inner face of each upright sits a large scallop shell, the signature ornament of the Louis XV Rocaille style. Below, four arms sweep out from a round central plate, each ending in a flower-shaped bobèche with a drip-effect candle sleeve. The chandelier hangs from a decorative chain and comes with its matching ceiling canopy. The gilt finish is bright and warm.

The chandelier is in good vintage condition, with some signs of use and age, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to install. Its compact size suits a bedroom, a small dining room or an entrance hall.
